The Phantom War Pages!

In The Phantom #25 from King Features, the lead Phantom feature is backed up by a tale of true war, specifically the beginning of the Civil War.

"Fort Sumter: Where Burst the Flames of War" is a four-page tale of the beginning of the War Between the States written by Raymond Marais, and features the artwork of Jeff Jones. Here is a link to the full story.

Here is an original art page showing off the budding talent of newcomer Jeff Jones.

And here are some more pages of original artwork by Jones. One source claims these also comes from The Phantom #25, but I cannot find evidence that is correct and I cannot find any evidence of it appearing in any other Phantom comic or any other King Features or Charlton Comic for that matter. The Battle of Blue Licks is a significant bit of Kentucky history.

Here is a link which claims the story was an unpublished Charlton story, and offers up more Jeff Jones gems as well from DC and elsewhere.

One is this story featuring Julius Caesar from the back pages of Mandrake the Magician #8.

Which makes me wonder why Mandrake never got the Charlton treatment when the rest of the King Features stuff went over to Derby. I cannot imagine it was sales, but I guess it must've been. Or maybe it just got lost in the shuffle.

Rip Off
